Education is one of the core areas of work for SAILS. We are currently working on developing a multi-disciplinary MA programme on human rights and development, which will be launched in 2017. We also offer short courses on SDG 16 and human rights in Bangladesh.
MA in Human Rights and Development
In a joint endeavor with BRAC university, SAILS is preparing to launch a multi-disciplinary Masters of Arts programme focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) from a South Asian perspective. The programme is aimed at development professionals who will learn how to use law as a medium for social change and enhance the quality of legal empowerment, justice and human rights in the context of globalization, economic transformation and socio-cultural and political changes in South Asia.
This innovative programme will place an equal emphasis on theory and practice of human rights. Scholars and practitioners from South Asia who have extensive experience of implementing human rights and access to justice programmes will serve as faculty and guest lecturers. The pedagogical method will combine interactive classroom teaching with group work, workshops and presentations and field work.
Students in the MA programme will complete 36 credits in 12 months. The programme will be offered on the premises of BRAC University, in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Full and partial scholarships will be available to students from the South Asia region.
The curriculum for the MA programme has been developed in consultation with leading educational and legal empowerment organizations in the South Asia region and development partners, such as the Center for Social Justice, Gujrat National Law University, NIRMA University, Jindal Global University, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Delegation of the European Union in India.
The MA programme will be launched in 2017. More information on the application and admissions process will be announced shortly.
SAILS plans to build its own campus in the future, which will be located in Savar, Dhaka on land donated by BRAC. Ground breaking ceremony of the new campus was held on 24th of November, 2015 when members of SAF Board and SAILS Governing Council were present. The campus will consist of an academic and a residential wing.
